Beautiful Cards

I've been working so hard on my etsy store I have been neglecting my blog. I shall try to do better. I have found some beautiful vintage cards that I have listed in my store. Several Easter cards that I love dearly and just recently some trade cards. I was familiar with trade cards but I didn't realize how lovely some of them are. Beautiful color and so much detail.

Be Careful What You Wish For

It is beautiful, and it shouldn't last long. I love to see it snowing but I hate to get snowed in for any length of time. I had some orders from etsy I needed to take to the post office, I got that done today. I measured the snow yesterday morning, 7 inches. I got out and shoveled some, took some pictures. Tiger the outside cat was enjoying it when she first went out. But later I think she had enough. She spent the rest of the day laying in the sun in her room. The photos are of Tiger, my front yard , and my driveway.

It's Snowing!

I don't know how much we'll get, the forecast is for 4-6 inches, but it's beautiful to watch. My son in Alaska, just north of Anchorage, got at least a foot yesterday. He said the roads had just gotten clear and now they are covered again. My homepage is alaskacam.com. The camera is on Main Street in Anchorage. One day he and his girlfriend stood on the sidewalk and called us so they could wave to us. Unfortunately they were really too small to recognize. It was the thought that counts.
I have added a lot of things to my etsy shop lately, changed the look a little, I've been having a good time experimenting with this and that. I have come across some really nice old cabinet photos, thought you might want to see.

My Furry Grandaughter

My youngest son brought home a rabbit in early June. Of course being an animal lover, I immediately started taking care of her. Clover now resides in our living room. I can't imagine her living in my sons room by herself most of the time. She is a sweetheart, I let her out three times a day. I close off parts of the house and she can run around and kick up her heels, which she does very well. She will jump up on the sofa to be petted. She is just like a dog, she nudges your hand with her nose to keep petting her. I do put the inside cat away, they have played together before, but the cat began to chase her a little too much. Clover will flop on her side when she is very happy with her petting. I must get a picture of that one day. Rabbits can be trained to use a litter box. We have a large plastic container in her cage with cedar shavings in it. She occasionally chews on something she shouldn't but she understands the word "no". She really is a joy to have in the house. She loves... bananas. I read somewhere that they can become addicted to them. Whenever I have a banana I give her a couple of small slices and she loves it. In the summer I grow plants for her. She loves parsley, basil, mint, brocolli, cauliflower, and much more. I know she's looking forward to me getting the garden going in the spring.

I have been enjoying putting items up for sale in my etsy shop. I keep thinking of more places to look and see whats available. I'm hoping this will bring out some creativity in me. When I was young I remember enjoying putting together small items on shelves as decoration. I would collect old fence insulators, paint them, and put small dried flowers in them. I collected bits of bark and other odd things. Once I had a compressed piece of dirt that came from a bulldozer track, wrapped in plastic in my drawer. For some reason that appealed to me. These pictures show two collections of items I put together and put in my etsy shop.

I have always wondered how this lovely coloring book survived without anyone marking in it. How the cover is in such good shape. I know it's old, plus I have had it tucked away for many years. I always wonder, how many people have been in contact with certain items. What stories they could tell. I don' t keep a journal, but I got in the habit many years ago of writing down the things I have done that day. Being an at home mom, I got in the habit when I would get to Friday and wonder, what have I accomplished this week? So, I started writing daily a few things that go on. It does come in handy when you try and remember, when did we do that, or whose house did we visit last Thanksgiving. And I hope my boys will hang on to the many small books I have now, they might not want to read them but maybe my grandchildren will!

Alright, I have to admit, I am a little slow at times, but it took me awhile to realize. I have been collecting vintage items for 20 years or more and just saving them for some reason. I have an old book I bought over 15 years ago at an estate sale, it was a collection by a women ahead of her time. She had taken the book "The Standard Dictionary of Facts" and turned it into a collection of newspaper clippings, hymns and other articles she wanted to save. Pasting the articles in the book. This was from the 1920's. I saw the book and became attached to it for some reason. I bought it and brought it home. It lived in my closet until this past year. I have been seeing all the interesting things people are doing with vintage items. There are some wonderful artists out there. So I thought, instead of having these items tucked away where no one can see them I would bring them out and offer them to someone who will make something beautiful with them.

I purchased this delightful sewing box many years ago at a flea market. It has many wonderful items in it. And there they sit, just waiting for someone to create with them.

So I intend to start selling some of my collection in my etsy shop and collecting more, I love antique shops, estate sales, and yard sales. When I finish a quilt or whatever I'm working on I will add that to the mix. I will post pictures here of the most interesting items I dig up! (That's a whole other story.)

Keepers

How attached do we get to our work? I have sold several of my lap quilts while secretly wanting to keep them. I had intended to keep a log cabin quilt when I made it years ago - I have always loved that pattern. But someone very dear to me wanted to buy it to give as a gift. Normally all of my quilts were for sale, so I didn't have the heart to say no. So now I do have several quilts in my home that I never intend to sell. On my dining room table is a quilt using a Kaffe Fassett pattern and fabric.

On the back of the sofa is a pattern I found in a quilt magazine. I have an Ocean Wave pattern out of older fabrics with wonderful color hanging on the wall.

And on the back of a favorite chair I have another colorful quilt in a Kaffee Fassett Lattice Quilt pattern with miscellaneous fabrics. All of these quilts I love for the color they add to my home.

Save Your Shoulder

Several years ago I developed a pain and discomfort in my right shoulder. Not knowing why, I wondered if my heavy purse was to blame. Since then I have been carrying "handbags". Since I like to experiment and try new things I designed this small handbag. It is large enough for a wallet, checkbook and more. It has pockets -for a cellphone, etc. I love the compact size. I named them "Save Your Shoulder" handbags. These bags can be found on my etsy site.

Not Quite A Blizzard

Well it was snowing this morning, we've got maybe an inch. It's been a very long time since we had a decent snow. I'm still hoping for one. A stray cat adopted us a little over a year ago. She likes to be outside and doesn't get along with our inside cat. I feed the birds during the winter and I was concerned about her catching them. We put bells on her collar and my husband made me this wonderful bird feeder - large enough for many birds at once! Don't worry, Tiger the stray cat (has been spayed) and has a cat door to a small room I keep heated in the winter for my plants.

Quilt Under Construction

I'm behind in my work - first the Holidays slowed me down, then my son and his girlfriend came in from Alaska for ten days. It was so good to see them and visit. We took them to the airport yesterday morning, so hard to see them go. Now I need to get back to work. I'm currently working on a lap quilt- Court House Steps, that I hope to finish soon and put in my etsy shop. The fabric is Allspice Tapestry, Fig Tree Quilts for Moda. I love the colors.

This batik quilt is one of my favorites, I saw the picture of a similar quilt in a magazine and this is my interpretation. It's currently for sale in my etsy shop.

Decoupage

Is decoupage making a comeback ? I hope so - Maybe it's never gone away. I bought Durwin Rice's book "New Decoupage" some time ago and fell in love with the decoupaged vases. I remember buying a kit when I was a teenager (many years ago), it was a wooden pocket book shaped like a barn, with trees and animals to decoupage. I loved it at the time but as I grew older I guess it was disposed of in some way. Now I wish I still had it. So, I am experimenting with the vases. Decoupaging from the inside and painting the vase as the background. If they turn out well enough, I hope to eventually have them in my etsy shop.
